Gais' work is based on the tradition of a gesture-object-free painting. The search for the lasting leads to serial paintings: Breathing, structures float as color appearance above the layered color pigments and are permeated by them. Harmony in rest and movement, chance and structure, color matter and color appearance, variety and unity are the hallmarks of the painterly conception of his "ornamenti". For him, image means "that the color takes on a form of appearance that has an inner meaning, a logic". The current works thematize the relationship between surface and space, stillness and movement. Mosaic-like ornaments become geometric shapes that jump out of the picture in perspective and add another layer to the iridescent background and foreground.
