Literature: Lothar Romain: Winfried Gaul. The Painter. Munich 1999, no. 96; Winfred Gaul. Works of Pop Art, Galerie Schlichtenmaier, Grafenau / Dätzingen 2016, p. 31

Winfred Gaul turned away from Informel in the early 1960s in favor of his style-defining signal and traffic-space paintings, which made him one of the protagonists of a German Pop Art. The untitled work from 1965 resembles an elevation in the upper field and a floor plan in the lower: streets can be guessed at, but above all the north arrow gives the impression of a city map. Otherwise, it is a matter of free-geometric forms in strong primary colors, which also allow free associations: Whether the red lane in the upper right represents a highway or a rainbow, both would be indebted to the pop element in this garish form.
