The painting "Transitions" belongs to the context of the so-called "flying forms", in which the slants sharpen in one or - as here - in two directions. The extreme dynamics cause irritation, if not physical-optical distress, to the viewer through these peaks - further intensified by the extreme color contrasts, which seem to set the painting into vital oscillations. Stankowski's typical diagonal guidance with constant crossing of the internal forms and colors refers to vectors and - according to Max Bense - "index figures" (indices in the sense of semiotics). With his principles of order, Stankowski unites free design and applied design. In this late work, his serial diagonal structure not only gives a direction to the upper right, but also derives it from the lower left, thus referring to time and space: past (dark - bottomless), present (blue, light gray, brown - bright moment of the moment; vague associations to the colors of the sky and nature) and future (bright/grey - relatively incisive perception) - at least transitions as dynamic events: falling and rising. Stankowski's work is guided by Hegel's aesthetic principles of spirituality and freedom, to which Bense referred many times.
