Between 1962 and 1966 Winfred Gaul created about ten variants of his "Four little roses", which are characterized by four rounded rectangles or squares on a landscape format or square (one secondary series comprises "Two little roses" in each case, another, with circular forms, "Three little roses" in portrait format). The initial image was a work that Gaul placed in the open air of a Milan streetscape in 1962 and that conspicuously heralded his phase of traffic signs and signals found in Italy: he rented a billboard on the motorway from Milan to Monza and displayed his "Signal Monza" there. Gaul deliberately and aggressively took art out of the studio and the museum and into the public sphere, having discovered the signal iconography of everyday life as a source of inspiration for his work. In its concrete, even counted form, the title contrasts with the abstract, in parts of the series - as here - with colorfully exalted, fashionably impressive color gradations and in other parts to scriptural fragments. The light blue in this present work affords an imaginary view into the distance as if from a window, but remains self-sufficient in a color composition that allows associations of flowers blooming in the open air, but which admits of no direct reference other than the title. For Gaul, it was more important to think less "about pictures" than "in pictures".
