The sculptures created around 1960 unmistakably paved the way for Erich Hauser's artistic independence, in that he found his characteristic rough sculptural form through constructive and closed tectonic elements, in which he then realized the unmistakable formal language of his main work. Thus this sculpture marks precisely the intersection of the transition to Hauser's mature style. The tectonic, constructive elements still dominate over the later, freer forms. Because of Hauser's high demands on himself, these early works left his studio only sporadically. Consequently, only a few works from this period have survived. This work, which stands for a logical development in Hauser's overall oeuvre, was considered by the artist himself to be completed and worthy of exhibition. Before Hauser used industrially produced steel plates for his sculptures, he was still experimenting with various materials in this phase of his work, as here with the simple material steel. This sculpture, created in 1960, is not only a wonderful example of Hauser's first important phase of work, it also illustrates how the sculptor embarked on the path of using constructive means of design in his sculptures to illustrate plastic form and the tense interplay of forces, in a dynamic that takes hold of the space.
