For the first time, Lambert Maria Wintersberger, who lived in Berlin from 1964-68 and shared a studio there in part with Markus Lüpertz, attracted public attention with works in which he seemingly incoherently linked body parts simplified beyond recognition in a smooth application of paint on the picture surface. Towards the end of the 1960s, his increasingly bold image sections, in combination with motifs that deliberately cause alienation in their collage-like linking, attracted increased attention due to the disfiguring and alienating effect of the tensions, bruises, and sharp divisions of limbs in his figurations. Only on close inspection are the causes and consequences of the agony and suffering depicted in the context of the painting perceptible, which seem exaggerated by their painterly skill and perfection. Likewise, the tonal application of paint, appearing in a matte finish with no discernible brushwork, reflects an immaculately radiant exterior that covers the thematic component of pain like makeup. Wintersberger succeeds in his memorable way to bring the opposites to simultaneous development and to help the supposedly "painful" expression not only to neutralization, but almost to "painless" aestheticization. With this work phase, he undisputedly consolidated his position in the German Pop Art movement, which in 2014 prompted the Frankfurt Kunsthalle Schirn to include his works in the groundbreaking exhibition "GERMAN POP".
