The picture "Complex M. E." by Rainer Wittenborn from 1970 closes itself off to spontaneous access - dark in the representation, both visually and sense-pictorially, one recognizes at first in the upper half of the picture a grid field, which in the lower part seemingly spatializes itself forward. Cryptic signs, lines, and numbers suggest plans that, according to the title, first refer back to themselves. The technoid surface, however, suggests that it is about sections of military representations. The work belongs to the environment of the "Military Offers" and the "Transmitted Pictures," which were created before and after 1970, respectively. Wittenborn is concerned with a critical investigation of the "increasingly independent mechanism of production and deployment of electronically controlled weapons systems" (Armin Zweite). Whether the various signs are about strategic data is left to the viewer's decision - that they are about people can be seen from the barely visible outline of a head profile. Rainer Wittenborn combines political content and aesthetic aspects with the cool precision of the scientific documentarian. In contrast to the agitational art of the 1960s, the artist does not devote himself to the emotional management of, for example, warlike conflicts, but to the sober apparatus that - far from an emotional evaluation - makes them possible in the first place. In later works, he incorporates photographs, texts, and objects into his depiction of cartographic, ethnic, and social data and signs. His anthropological interest also led him to ecological projects in Canada, Italy and the Amazon.
