A copy of an old illustration of a hermaphrodite, reworked with ink, is collaged into the painting.
Literature: Walter Stöhrer. Catalog raisonné of paintings 1957-1999, Berlin 2008, p. 425 (cat. no. 94.10).

The title of the 1994 painting refers to the inked copy of a late medieval or early modern illustration of a hermaphrodite that Stöhrer collaged into the painting. Such depictions often invoke the Roman writer Pliny, who early on dealt most intensively with human and animal bisexuality. Whether one can derive (or read) the phallic and vaginal forms in the painting from this remains to be seen - the emblematic figurations, especially the head abbreviations appearing half as sperm, half as ghostly caricature, are part of Stöhrer's fixed pictorial language.
