Lambert Maria Wintersberger's work, created between 1965 and 1975, is a direct but completely independent reaction to Pop Art. He, too, focuses on the sober, even mercenary world of consumption. However, he links the advertising world with physically inflicted pain. Monumentalized body limbs from the field of vision or finger limbs are maltreated by clamps, nails or - as here - by a razor blade. Who applied the blade or to whom the thumb belongs remains hidden, but is also of no interest due to the complete anonymity of the scenery. The empathy-free depiction and the oversized limbs intensify the oppressive atmosphere all the more, as Winterberger wraps the entire depiction in soft forms and immerses it in an entirely soft-painted color scheme. The brutal use of a commercial Gilette blade, which could also be an advertising poster, contrasts with the social reality of vulnerability. Having become famous with these works, the painter later turned to gestural-expressive painting, which acted as a bridge from Pop Art to the visual language of the so-called New Wilds.
