Along with Gerhard Hoehme, K. O. Götz, Bernhard Schultze or Peter Brüning, Karl Rudolf Hoffmann from Sonderborg in Denmark is one of the most important and powerful representatives of German informal painting.
This 1989 work by K.R.H. Sonderborg, titled with the date of creation "10.9.89", belongs to the later creative phase of the artist. It was created in the year in which he was awarded the Hans Thoma Prize, the state prize of the state of Baden-Württemberg. Sonderborg had already made a name for himself in the 1950s as a co-founder of the ZEN group in Munich. The work, executed on canvas and featuring Sonderborg's typical reduced color canon of black, white, and cadmium red, captivates the viewer with its spiraling, full-body circular movements of rapidly applied brushstrokes. Sonderborg, as so often in his work, also recorded the exact time and duration of creation on the back of the painting; in this case, it was between 16:12 and 16:57.
