"Mars", the ancient god of war, is shown in profile view in Rissa's painting of the same name from 2004 - with pop colors flames flicker from his mouth, grasping a branch with fruit. The scenery aims at a distancing effect: the picture is composed mainly by means of contour and striking surfaces, not least by pop art aesthetics. Any empathy is completely omitted, the protagonist's gaze almost cold and directed at the flame, as if the viewer did not even exist. This superficial appearance, however, belies the fascinating painterly outbursts that create well-placed sensual moments - behind the eye area as well as within the flames, the brushstroke breaks through.
