Bettina van Haaren's body fragments are of such oppressive reality or better: detail, that the only sketchy hints of bodily additions cause irritation. This is intentional in the painting "Turkish Pool", as is the incompatibility of human and animal, self-portrait and foreign being. And yet there are mysterious connections: the bands around the female head seem like traces of movement of the bird; its neck corresponds with that of the second, which is also only really visible with its head. In between, there is a loop of the bird's neck, human intestines and arm, which is held by the hands of the painterly "I". This I would be comparable to the fixed concept of the lyrical I, which in poetry means the self of the author and the I of an artistic figure. The seriousness in the protagonist's facial expression reveals that what is at stake here is the exposed essence of art - no more and no less.
