Volker Lehnert plays with the clichés of an ideal world and, in the end, overpaints them with a hopeless vision. For at the very moment when we think we are entering familiar terrain, he lets us stumble into imponderable terrain. Thus, for example, a passages of strongly colored Waldeslust, which would have fit so wonderfully into a post-Romantic tradition, gives way to a disillusioned image of a threatened, all too fragile piece of nature. The fact that Lehnert does not take everything he paints seriously makes him credible, for all his absurdity. For it is not the visible reality he is up to, but the remembered, experienced and exquisite - synchronously he superimposes everything retrospectively and creates a reality beyond mere perception. This 'stream of consciousness' is most immediate in the drawing, which is created on the spot.
