It was less the tradition of the 17th-century Dutch kitchen piece that inspired Vera Mercer than the living world in which still life shaped everyday life: as a restaurant owner, art lies, so to speak, between the food market and the kitchen. Thus, vanitas clichés play no role whatsoever for her. What the viewer makes of it is his or her freedom. Each thing has a presence of its own in Mercer's work, some appearing repeatedly in the work - such as the mostly old glasses. Mercer stages the objects like a stage set, at times the proportions are thrown overboard, which gives the sceneries their fascinatingly surreal effect. The candlelight as a secondary light source also creates a sense of alienation. Vera Mercer's still lifes are an accumulation of utensils; the lighting direction and composition make them perfect.
