Wilhelm Loth's sculptures of his early work are already characterized by an emphasized simplification of form. The idea of grasping the human body as a hollow form comparable to vessels was derived from Toni Stadler, his teacher at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. Loth's turn to the archaic and the translation into a speaking plastic form, which at the same time corresponds to the surface of the material, finds a thoughtful and distinct formulation in the "Statuette II", which he created between 1951 and 1956.
