Alfred Lehmann deals consistently over 6 decades - from about 1917 to 1978 - (with changing emphases) with the timeless themes of man, landscape and still life. He is almost always representational, but - if "isms" are to be brought into play at all - never naturalistic, purely impressionistic or expressionistic. Alfred Lehmann does not attach importance to the superficial depiction of the world, to realistic criticism of time, or to the expression of a momentary emotional state. Lehmann is concerned - in the most literal sense - "with the whole". How is it structured, our world? And where does man stand? This question tries the painter, who admires Cézanne above all, in his work artistically express.
