1941War volunteer to serve; begins to draw and paint in watercolors
1945Private studies with the painter and graphic artist William Straube, once a student of Hölzel and Matisse
1948acquaintance with Willi Baumeister and in 1949 with Julius Bissier; turns to abstract art
1954Scholarship from the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Gouvernement Français; in Paris he works in the studios of Fernand Léger and Hans Arp
1961Prix Jean Arp
1966Silver medal of the Prix d'Europe in Ostend
1963Retrospective held at the Museum am Ostwall in Dortmund
1967/68Begins teaching at the Munich Art Academy; participates in documenta 4
1982takes his own life in Munich
