1953-54painting and drawing lessons with Jürgen Böttcher (Strawalde); member of the uncompromising artist group "Erste Phalanx Nedserd", which precluded studies in the GDR; various jobs as a draftsman, stoker, night watchman, letter carrier and small actor in film
1966under the pseudonym A. R. Penck candidate for the Association of Visual Artists
1971-76Founds the artists' group "Lücke"; "Standart" paintings
1972/82/92Participation in Documenta V, VII, and IX (participation in Documenta VI was pushed back by the East and did not materialize)
1975Will-Grohmann-Prize by the Academy of Arts in West-Berlin
1976Collaboration with Jörg Immendorff; subsequently, Penck's state surveillance intensifies
1980Expatriation; moves to Kerpen near Cologne; also active as musician, poet, essayist
1983Moves to London
1985Aachen Art Prize
1988Appointed professor of painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy
2003Dublin, Ireland
2017died in Zurich
