1951Paris, meeting with the painters Jackson Pollock and Jean-Paul Riopelle; begins with his characteristic overpaintings of his own and other
 of his own works and those of others.
1955In the second half of the 1950s, he transfers these overpaintings to photographic self-portraits; in performance works as of 1958
 he also paints over his own body
1966Austrian State Prize for Graphic Arts
1972/77participation in the "documenta", Kassel
from 1977death becomes a central theme
1978Austrian State Prize for Painting; participation in the Venice Biennale
