Kalinowski's work is characterized by abstraction and material. Early on, he experimented with the use of different materials in his paintings. One focus of his work is leather compositions, some of which are two-dimensional, but also three-dimensional. In a kind of organic balancing act, he combines the leather with pieces of wood, metals or other textiles. For these objects he often uses historical transmission belts and driving belts from old industrial plants, which have a special texture and coloring and give the works a soft and warming aura. His graphics and bronze objects also make use of this earthy color palette.
