The current ONLINE exhibition is dedicated to HAP Grieshaber, an artist whose death anniversary is now the thirtieth.
The Schlichtenmaier Gallery has honored the woodcutter from the Achalm since 1981 in seven solo exhibitions and in numerous group exhibitions and trade shows. Now it presents in two groups with a total of 75 woodcuts, drawings, watercolors and painting letters their current offer, which includes exciting and rare new acquisitions.
HAP Grieshaber develops a distinctive body of work in the interplay of an archaic formal vocabulary and a primal sense of nature, adding a striking facet to the supra-temporal theme of the human figure.
HAP Grieshaber linked the familiarity with nature and the creative with the technique of woodcut and created in it archetypes of a figural formal language. The intensity and the power of the images make us feel the massive mass and the use of the body in dealing with the material wood. Never before had the woodcut, developed in the Middle Ages to disseminate information and rediscovered by the Expressionists, possessed such artistic-painterly dimensions.
Particularly in the artist's handprints created in a few copies, of which the current ONLINE EXHIBITION shows some special examples, Grieshaber frees the woodcut from the function of a servant duplication technique and upgrades it to a means of artistic design, without giving up the social mission associated with it, the multiplication of a message.
We are also pleased to present rare maquettes to the woodcuts and drawings, as well as painting letters, which reveal largely unknown facets of the artist.
The works of Grieshaber can be viewed at any time in the gallery in Dätzingen Castle; we can also present individual works to you on request in the gallery in Stuttgart.
