"Fleischmann's modesty is not pusillanimity, but dignity!" (Will Grohmann)
Accompanying the solo exhibition "Adolf Fleischmann - Pioneer of Modernism ", which is presented in the Stuttgart branch of the Schlichtenmaier Gallery from June 21 to September 8, 2012, we show here paintings, gouaches and serigraphs from his main creative period.
The painter, originally born in Esslingen, moved to Paris during the turmoil of war, joined there, among others, the artist group "l'Équipe" and emigrated in 1952 to New York, where he found his own style.
With the discovery of his horizontal-vertical design elements, he developed within a few years to a main representative of international abstraction. In retrospect, the consistency with which he pursued his pictorial idea based on geometric means, even before Victor Vasarely and Jesús Rafael Soto, makes him a pioneer of Op(tical) Art as well as an early idea carrier of kinetics.
