Paul Reich

In our ONLINE exhibition and in the gallery in Dätzingen Castle is to rediscover the sculptor Paul Reich, who took a very independent and idiosyncratic position. Unlike Emil Cimiotti or Otto Herbert Hajek in sculpture and Pfahler, Gaul or Brüning among the painters, who consciously went through the Informel, Reich saw the gestural part of his works much more committed to a leeway, which he subordinated to the rules of his imagination. In particular, the transparent Plexiglas that he combined with the slaggy bronze and brass conglomerates made it clear that his thinking circled in different categories than those of his contemporaries. As he moved away from his abstract-expressive works, which repeatedly show essential manifestations of decay, the spatial form increasingly cleared: it rhythmized itself in a refined way in multi-stranded "light chains" and culminated in so-called "light chess" folds, which in the material alternation of stainless steel, artificial stone, and Plexiglas allowed for an almost infinite number of refractions of a trans-substantial kind. The exhibition in Dätzingen celebrates the 90th birthday of Paul Reich, whose work has long been underestimated, with a brilliant selection from his oeuvre. His light-space art deserves to find new lovers, especially in our present time.
