Horst Antes on his 80th birthday

Horst Antes was just past 40 when he had participated three times in the Documenta in Kassel, received scholarships from the Villa Romana (Florence) and the Villa Massimo (Rome), and been awarded the UNESCO prize at the Venice Biennale - and he made art history with his 'Kopffüßlern' (Cephalopods), which the former Grieshaber student had concocted with fellow students Heinz Schanz and Walter Stöhrer: Without question, he is one of the most famous German artists in the second half of the 20th century. On Friday, October 28, he celebrates his 80th birthday. The gallery celebrates with and opens an exhibition with works from the last 50 years, including the famous classics of irritatingly childlike, unapproachably disturbed and headily fantasy-drifying figures, but also the well-known, extremely reduced, but suggestive (head) houses and not least the period pictures, in which Antes meticulously documented on the back, that is, to the day, what appears to have coagulated into a cryptic moment on the front. The picture with the last entry dates from 2016. The world of the painter Horst Antes is populated by only a few groups of motifs in different work phases, but his visual language is so diverse - sometimes following the figuration of the Moai on the Easter Islands, sometimes the dwellings of the Navahos, an Indian people in America - that it has lost none of its fascination to this day. His works transcend all boundaries: those of the image of man, those of cultures, and those of time.
