Elisabeth Wagners has become known for her room-sized installations and portrait busts, in which the sculptor borrows art-historically known portraits from works by Old Masters, such as Petrus Christus - the "Young Girl" is based on his work - , Albrecht Dürer, Jan van Eyck, Jean Fouquet, Francisco de Goya, Rembrandt and Velázquez. Her sculptures deal with spatial conditions and describe the atmospheric environment created by the sculpture. By de-individualizing the models through the paradigm shift from painterly to sculptural form, Elisabeth Wagner creates a realism of irritating beauty.
