After the liberation from National Socialism, Willi Baumeister's series of "Figure Walls," which had already been hinted at in isolated instances, began to loosen up around 1946/47 into "Enlivened Walls," "Cheerful Movements," or "Scenes of Departure. The phalanx of sign-like figures, as visibly as tangibly bound to the colorfully restless surface of the background, make the picture appear as a graffiti-like work. While the background exhibits an almost gestural impetuosity - a possible expression of the new freedom - Baumeister attempts to literally search for form in the figurative layer: Triangles, circles, diamonds, reference lines, etc., as if he wanted to give the shattered image of man a new shape.
