Heinz Schanz, one of the formative artists for southwest German painting in the postwar period, is considered a co-founder of Karlsruhe's "New Figuration" at a time when non-objective painting held sway internationally. In the circle of HAP Grieshaber's students Horst Antes, Walter Stöhrer, Dieter Krieg and Hans Baschang, the somewhat older Heinz Schanz played an important role for his colleagues. Schanz himself was influenced less by the woodcutter than by the gouache painter Grieshaber, who used dull paint to put his designs on paper and had his students paint over the paintings as a rite of passage. In contrast to Lothar Quinte, who initially worked in a similar way, however, Schanz always stuck to the figurative. This work, created in 1960, literally shows the process of its creation. Schanz hurled the white, light red, and blue tempera and printing inks onto the cardboard-like painting base, which appears expressive, powerful, wild, and gestural, but can in no way be understood as informal. In this untitled egg tempera painting, the brushstrokes and strokes, obviously applied quickly to the cardboard, form rough outlines that evoke associations with a grimacing head.
