Inspired by cinematic dramaturgy, Peter Sehringer's 2016 painting "Five up" has a handful of riders dash impressively toward the viewer from a frog's-eye view, only to stop short, as one might suspect from the horses' gestures. The scenery is entirely in black and light gray, and although - with the exception of a rider who can only be glimpsed - the protagonists along with their horses are easy to make out, the ensemble consists only of black areas and spots: Only the viewer's collective memory of corresponding film templates (there can hardly be any question of real experiences) produces a valid image, comprehensible right down to the facial expressions, of a pack of cowboys coming at us out of the glaring sun. The image-immanent hatchings in the black as well as the shadowy immediacy create the impression of a high tempo, which is reflected in the tension-rich image structure.
