For decades, Jürgen Brodwolf's tube figure has depicted the situation of man in a world that can hardly be explained. That he invented this auratic figure, which has become iconic, is common knowledge. That it also came to him to some extent, who "actually would have wanted to become ... a painter", requires a reminder. In the beginning there was indeed the tube, a commercial paint tube crushed by use, from whose shape Brodwolf read the human figure. He modeled the figure, transferred the rolled lead form to other materials: cardboard, gauze, canvas, cast bronze. In this way, the artist varied this existentially essential cipher in so many ways that in the end it hardly resembled a tube and yet always remained human: enigmatic in appearance, melancholy in effect, vulnerable in its being, in search of itself.
