The Chinese artist Xianwei Zhu sees himself as a wanderer between worlds - on the one hand committed to his native East Asian tradition, on the other inspired by German Romanticism. His scenic landscapes revolve around the themes of loss of home and homecoming. Sources in the work include references to Zen as well as borrowings from Caspar David Friedrich, while texts by Hölderlin and Heidegger also flow into the substantial, symbolically charged work. Some lines from Hölderlin's poetry, Zhu says, "speak to me as clearly as if they were written by a good friend." He links his fate with the mood of Chinese poems (Hanshan: "Looking at the void, madness passes into silence"); in the image, he approaches Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer figure here.
