Elger Esser's photographic works seem to have fallen out of time, as if they were taken in the early years of photography in the 19th century, and at the same time the photographs are highly complex results of contemporary photographic art. The passionate collector of historical picture postcards knows how to place the present time in a magical spell of the past. The retro look follows the Proustian philosophy of the "lost time" that has to be searched for. Esser, one of the most important graduates of the legendary Becher class in Düsseldorf and 2016 winner of the Schlemmer Prize, knows how to capture the magic of a place - as here the Île d'Arun - on the surface of elaborate image carriers. "In my work," Esser says, "I live in another time," which he revives for the viewer. This time can only be preserved through its preservation or re-creation in the work of art, which is how one could paraphrase the photographer's credo.
