At the end of the 1960s, Jürgen Brodwolf combined his tube figures with utilitarian objects that had become functionless, such as wooden boxes, shoe boxes, or drawers. In doing so, he creates self-contained worlds that emanate a certain timelessness and reveal his irrepressible urge for scenic design. Through unusual views or glimpses, he opens up infinite possibilities of association in his "showcases," which combine in the minds of the viewers to form subjectively colored stories. The object work "The Chains", created in 1968, appears in combination with an old drawer and window frame like a small wall shelf, in which two figurines, provided with numbers and chains, as well as a bowl blotted with paint, related to the set box principle, are placed. Here, the connection between the "chained" figurines and the numbering can evoke situations of imprisonment. Indeed, a deeply touching, even oppressive feeling emanates from the narrative constellations. Immediately we are thrown back on elementary questions of existence with all its external and internal constraints.
