In Jan Muche's work, rational constructivism and anarchic fantasy collide. It seems as if he is looking for a technoid backdrop to make the inner constraints of systems recognizable. He explicitly seeks "to play with surfaces and forms, to make visible and at the same time dissolve structures." The appeal of the unknown, the enigmatic characterizes the work. And this extends to the portraits. Does the person play a role aesthetically? For Muche, the protagonists are "pretexts for being able to paint." But that, too, is relative. For the models are not chosen by chance, of course - as here Franz Kafka after a photograph. Jan Muche paints partly associatively, partly with calculation, largely avoiding emotional involvement - after all, the paintings are not based on portrait sessions, but on interpretations of human physiognomy.
