Rudolf Dischinger's "Hinterhäuser" from 1935 belongs to a neo-objective style phase of the artist, in which he orientates himself on George Grosz with echoes of the Pittura Metafisica, but also maintains close contacts with Julius Bissier in Freiburg. The rear houses are probably to be located there: light and shadow face each other in harsh contrasts, creating an extreme depth spatiality, which is further enhanced by a descending staircase visible on the lower right. Sophisticated slopes - in addition to the shadows, the roofs also compete with the vertical orientation of the house scene - create a great formal tension, which is heightened by the fact that the housescape is completely devoid of people. Only the centrally visible shed with boxes or cartons testifies to human labor and existence.
