Matthias Mansen mostly uses found objects for his wood prints, which he colors with strong oil paints by hand, roller, and brush and transfers wet-on-wet or opaque as frottage onto the canvases. He uses knives, drills, erasing needles, and chisels to work on the printing block. Photographic notes taken on walks serve as motifs. However, these motifs are alienated and abstracted during the transfer. The result is literally multi-layered, multi-plate printed, multi-faceted images in which individual views merge into a dense pictorial structure.
