Inspired by Constructivism at the beginning of the 20th century, Jan Muche deals with spatial utopias whose tradition reaches back to Vladimir Tatlin and further to Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Muche enlivens these ideas with his own colorful visual language, which draws on elements of photography and Pop Art as well as the aesthetics of digital image processing, which he transfers into his paintings of acrylic, ink, and occasionally boat paint or even ash. Some housing-like object sculptures take up the theme of illusory architecture. In addition to his abstract spaces and scaffolded scenes, the work also includes figurative representations. These include portraits of poets, portraits of illustrious personalities, and figurations that allow plenty of room for narrative associations. Complex, ambiguous characters are crucial in the selection of people, most of whom are taken from the media. The constructed, sometimes unwieldy world, which also appears in the background of the figurations, underlines the impression of a multi-layered reality that cannot always be penetrated. Formal repetitions of certain pictorial zones in other works and the sometimes woodcut-like impression in the details of the rulings are intentional and, in contrast, aim at the just apparent comprehensibility of the world.
