The studied wood sculptor began early to break away from the figuration of his teacher Alfred Lörcher and to abstract the human figure dutifully. He also overcame the expressive heaviness stemming from his wartime experiences by the 1960s at the latest in order to deal with linear form - drawing became increasingly important. Even in his constructively built sculptures and especially in the reliefs - as in the work "Weißes Bild 1966/III" - he was preoccupied with the line, which in relief acquires an iconic dignity. The reduction is continued to the point of meditative austerity.
