Luzia Simons - even if one stands overwhelmed in front of her monumental flower scans - is not in search of the absolutely beautiful: her reference back to the Golden Age of the Netherlands in the 17th century contains, in addition to the illusion of beautiful appearances, a commitment to the idea of vanitas, which is frequently invoked in modernism. In the 2006 drawing, Simons creates the poetic image of a vegetal content, partially heightened by watercolor: The title succinctly calls the depiction "weeds." Gestural and formed form a unity that reveals micro- and macrocosmic - sometimes blossoms, sometimes diffuse foliage, heightened even further by delicate glazes. The mystery of nature in the becoming as in the passing is the actual theme of the sheet, which was created in a series of similar motifs.
